New Delhi: In a key move to enhance transparency and stakeholder engagement in India’s patent ecosystem, the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM), functioning under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has announced in-person meetings to deliberate on stakeholder feedback received for the Draft Guidelines on Computer Related Inventions (CRI).
This initiative follows a public notice issued on March 25, 2025, inviting written representations on the revised CRI draft.
Computer Related Inventions Stakeholder Consultations
The upcoming stakeholder consultations aim to enable direct dialogue between the Patent Office and innovators, legal experts, and technology developers affected by these evolving guidelines.
The meetings will be conducted at the following venue:
- City: Delhi
- Date: May 13, 2025
- Time: 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
- Venue: Conference Hall, Bauddhik Sampada Bhawan, Plot No. 32, Sector 14, Dwarka, New Delhi – 110078
Stakeholders interested in attending these sessions must confirm their participation via email to cgoffice.in@gov.in.
The revised CRI guidelines reflect the evolving landscape of technological innovation, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT, and quantum computing.
The guidelines clarify patent eligibility in relation to Section 3(k) of the Indian Patents Act, which excludes mathematical methods, business methods, computer programs per se, and algorithms from patent protection – unless they demonstrate a tangible technical effect.
Legal interpretations from recent high court rulings, including those involving Microsoft, Raytheon, and Blackberry, have informed this draft, setting the stage for a more nuanced examination of software-led and hybrid inventions.
